Learn the pottery wheel: a friendly, practical introduction for beginners

Why try the pottery wheel?

  1. Hands-on creativity: Shape clay with your hands and see a real object take form in minutes.

  2. Fast learning curve: Basic forms (bowls, cups, small vases) come quickly with a few focused sessions

  3. Therapeutic and social: The tactile, repetitive motions are calming and workshops build community

  4. Practical results: Finish pieces you can use, gift, or keep as reminders of your progress

What you’ll learn in your first classes:

  • Clay basics: Types, how to wedge (remove air), and keeping clay at the right moisture

  • Centering: The essential skill for stable, even pieces

  • Opening and pulling: Turning a centered lump into walls

  • Trimming and finishing: Refining shape, smoothing, and prepping for glazing

  • Simple glazing and firing overview so your pots become durable, usable ware

Course formats to fit your life:

  • Hands-on practice with instructor demonstration. Great for testing whether the wheel feels right for you.

  • Multi-week beginner series. You can take the beginner class twice! Builds skills progressively — centering, pulling, trimming, and glazing. Best for steady improvement.
